Our Story

Hey everyone!

We wanted to share our story, not just because it led us here, but because it’s a reminder of all the love, support, and joy that surrounds us. As we prepare for our wedding day, we’re excited to let you in on the moments that made our story uniquely ours!

In December of 2023, Makayla made the decision to transfer to the University of Oklahoma. While home for Christmas break, she played in a tournament in Arizona, where several members of the Oklahoma men’s golf team were also competing. She noticed them and knew she would soon be part of the same program, but she wasn’t quite brave enough to introduce herself yet.

Fast forward to the first week of spring classes at Oklahoma. Makayla and Matthew happened to share a night class—Managerial Accounting—though they had still not officially met. Makayla recognized Matthew from the tournament and looked up the men’s golf roster to learn his name. After a moment of hesitation, she gathered the courage to ask, “Hey, were you at the Patriot?” Matthew gave her a puzzled look before confirming that he was, and the two began talking about her transfer as they walked into class together.

As they settled in, Makayla realized how hungry she was, and Matthew offered her his peanut butter and jelly Uncrustable. He told her she would need to grab one every Wednesday night after practice so she’d be prepared, since she would never have time for dinner before class.

Over the following week, after each night class, they spent hours standing in the freezing cold simply talking and getting to know one another. Matthew eventually asked for Makayla’s Snapchat—supposedly for “homework help”—and a week later, Makayla asked if he would like to get dinner after class sometime.

The next week, they went to Pickleman’s for pizza, and Matthew immediately caught her full attention when he prayed over their meal without being prompted. That very night, Makayla returned home and told everyone, “I am going to marry him.”

Over the next week and a half, they spent more and more time together, and Makayla took Matthew around Oklahoma City since he had never visited before. During their walk, Matthew showed Makayla a text he had sent to his family saying he was “dating her.” Confused—because he hadn’t officially asked her out—Makayla brought it up later that evening. When she asked why he said they were dating, Matthew replied, “Well, because we are.” She laughed and explained, “We’re going out, but we’re not officially dating. You have to ask me.”

Realizing his oversight, Matthew then asked, “Well… will you be my girlfriend?” Makayla laughed, said yes, and the rest of their story unfolded from there.

Over the next year, they continued to grow in their relationship—both with each other and with God—while spending meaningful time getting to know the families that would one day become their own. In April of 2025, Makayla was competing in the NCAA Regionals tournament at Oklahoma, where the team finished third and secured their spot at Nationals. Matthew quickly realized this was his moment to ask for Makayla’s hand in marriage, knowing her dad would be in an especially good mood after her strong performance. The conversation was short, sweet, and ended with a resounding yes.

Fast forward to July. After Makayla shared very specific instructions to ensure all their family members were present for the proposal, Matthew somehow managed to pull it all together—flying his family in to surprise her. On July 3rd, at the family lake house, Matthew got down on one knee and asked Makayla to marry him—and she said yes (of course). He had planned the most thoughtful moment, and afterward they drove back to the other house, where both of their families were waiting, dressed in blue and waving sparklers. It was the perfect day, celebrating with their favorite people and seeing both big families together for the very first time.

Now here we are, getting ready for our big day and the rest of our lives together and we can't wait to spend it celebrating with all of you!
